Matthew Umphreys has been the music director for Columbia Baptist since 2014. He started playing in church when he was 12 years old, performing piano/organ duets with his church organist (who was also his piano teacher), and playing in the praise band both on Sunday mornings and in his youth group. Previous to working at Columbia, Matthew was the assistant music director and children’s choir director at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, and sang in the professional choir at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in Cincinnati, Ohio for two years.
Matthew is on faculty in the music department at Xavier University in Cincinnati, where he accompanies all of the college’s choirs, teaches classes on opera, and plays for recitals and voice lessons. He has worked as a vocal coach and pianist with Cincinnati Opera and RokCincy in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Savannah Voice Festival in Savannah, Georgia, Opera in the Ozarks in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and the Summertime Players in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Matthew also performs regularly with his Cincinnati-based chamber ensemble All of the Above. The group performed at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy in July 2017, and made their Carnegie Hall debut in New York in December 2017.
Matthew graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with his Master’s degree in Collaborative Piano in 2014. He is a native of Council Bluffs, Iowa and received his undergraduate degree in Piano Performance and Business Management in 2011 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. In his (very limited!) spare time, Matthew enjoys yoga, reading, walks in Alms Park, and Starbucks.
